History

History
Madakkathara Grama Panchayat is a panchayat with unique features consisting of mountains, hills, canals, and rice fields. It has 16 wards.
According to the ancients, the people of the Perumpadappu royal family occupied land in many places and built forts. Since there were many forts like this, this place came to be known as Kottepaadam.
There was an area in this grama panchayat where the Poovvam tree was spread out and surrounded by a forest. This forest area is known as Kattila Poovvam by adding the name of the tree and later it was shortened and is now known as Kattilapoovvam.
It is said that the ancients read in the legends that in the past, Lord Shiva went for alms with a bowl of water and then threw it away. The place where this water fell was known as Chirakkathode. Over time, this changed to Chirakkakode.
Kurinji means mountain. Kurinji, which is the name of the valley of the mountain, evolved into Kurichi, which gave rise to the name of the place. Kurikkakara was also recorded as the name of a village in the records of 85 years ago. This village still exists in the Panchayat Tirthi.
Many indications are seen in Kurinjipatti that are based on the place Madakkathara. The word madam is derived from the word mullaithin, which is the source of forest area names, and it is said in Kurinchipattil that it was customary to build a series of huts on the tops of trees to drive away wild animals that came to destroy the crops. There is also a clear indication that the huts were built to protect the crops and to protect them from animals. It is said that the center of the huts was later removed and the name Madakkathara came into existence.

Socio-cultural history
Despite its proximity to the city, Madakkathara Gram Panchayat is an agricultural panchayat that has a completely rural atmosphere. In 1922, Sree Narayana Guru established the Seva Math, performed the Subrahmanya Pratishtha here and provided worship facilities for the Ezhavas here. In 1936, a rural library was opened in Madakkathara. Due to the severe food shortage in the forties, the forest area was forced to be cleared and cultivated. Individuals and groups alike took up farming in the forest land. By the end of the forties, a large number of people from Travancore had migrated to the forest land here. With this, the eastern part of the panchayat began to become densely populated and active. NH 47 road connecting Kerala and Tamil Nadu passes through this panchayat. There are no large-scale industrial establishments in the public sector here. There are 73 small-scale industries in Madakkathara grama panchayat. The grama panchayat was formed in 1969.
