Kachithode Check DAM
Kachithode Check DAM
The Kachithodu Dam is being opened to tourists, bringing a boost to the tourism sector in Madakkathara Panchayat. Ministers K. Rajan and Roshy Augustine jointly inaugurated the renovated Kachithodu check dam, a project led by the Water Resources Department. The existing check dam and its surroundings have undergone renovation by the Thrissur Minor Irrigation Office. Originally built for flood control, the dam had fallen into disrepair over time. Its storage capacity had diminished, and the surrounding areas had become overgrown with vegetation, making access to the reservoir difficult. Minister Rajan took the initiative to secure an allocation of ₹5 crore from the state budget for the project. The reservoir's storage capacity has been increased. Beyond its role in storing rainwater from the surrounding hills for drinking and agricultural purposes, the Kachithodu Dam has now been developed into a tourism destination. Tiled walkways have been constructed over the dam and around the reservoir, complemented by seating areas and a footbridge. Visitors can enjoy the view from a platform extending towards the water, and steps have been built to provide access to the water's edge. Facilities such as a restroom complex and coffee shop buildings are also ready. It is located 15 kilometers from Thrissur. The Minister stated that once the Vazhani-Peechi corridor road is completed, the Kachithodu Dam will also gain prominence as a tourism destination. The renovation work was carried out under the leadership of Seena Beegam, Assistant Executive Engineer of the Minor Irrigation Department.
