Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt

"Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt" is a new initiative launched by the Kerala Police to root out the drug mafia. The project is being implemented jointly with the cooperation of the Education, Health, and Excise departments. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan inaugurated the state-level launch of the project at a ceremony held at Cotton Hill School in Thiruvananthapuram on June 2, 2026.

Through this initiative, the Kerala Police aims to take stringent legal action against drug mafias and build a robust public defense with the participation of the community. The project has been conceived in a manner suited to the digital age to counter the rapid spread of synthetic drugs. Beyond issuing a stern warning of the law to drug mafias, the mission also seeks to ensure a sense of complete security for the general public.

Joint strategies will be planned in consultation with police chiefs from other South Indian states to dismantle inter-state drug trafficking networks. An extensive digital surveillance system, comprising mobile apps and WhatsApp chatbots, will be established to facilitate the anonymous sharing of information regarding the drug trade. The police will ensure the protection of those providing confidential information. In conjunction with the state-level inauguration of 'Operation Toofan,' the 'Toofan' flag will be hoisted at all local self-government institutions across the state on September 28, 2026. Following the administration of the 'Toofan' pledge, local self-government institutions are required to organize various public awareness campaigns tailored to local contexts, aimed at preventing substance abuse and disseminating anti-drug messages to diverse sections of society. Activities to be organized include rallies, cycling rallies, street plays, puppet shows, mural painting, storytelling sessions, flash mobs, drawing competitions, group discussions/debates, poetry recitations, student and youth-centric programs, and awareness sessions for parents.
